General provisions

Technical design is developed when it is stipulated in technical specifications, the protocol of technical proposal or sketch design review.

Technical design is worked out with the aim of making the ultimate solutions that give a complete idea about the product structure, when it is reasonable to do this before the working documentation development.

Note. At the technical design stage, the works specified at the previous stages are not repeated, if there are no additional data. In this case, the results of performed works are recorded in the explanatory note.

Models should be intended for checking (where necessary – at Customer’s or Consumer’s site) the constructive and schematic solutions for the product and (or) its component parts to be developed and also for confirmation of the solutions finally made.

Technical design consists of the design documents in compliance with GOST 2.102-68 (download pdf or doc) stipulated in the technical specifications and the protocol of technical proposal and sketch design review.

Requirements to documents execution

General view drawing for technical documents should be made as per GOST 2.119-73. In addition, the general view drawing contains the following if needed:

indication of selected fits of parts (dimension and limit deviations of mating surfaces are drawn as per GOST 2.307-68);

technical requirements to the product, for example, application of some coatings, methods of coils impregnation, welding methods that provide the product required quality (these requirements must be taken into account when working out the working documentation);

product technical characteristics necessary for further development of drawings.

Explanatory note of technical design is worked out as per GOST 2.106-96 with regard for the following main requirements to sections content:

а) section “Introduction” comprises the name, the number and the date of technical design approval.

b) section “Intended use and application field of the product under development” contains:

brief characteristic of product application field and conditions;

general characteristic of the site where this product is used (if necessary);

main data that must ensure the stability of product quality parameters in operation conditions;

c) section “Technical characteristics” contains:

product main technical characteristics (power, number of revolutions, capacity, consumption of electric power and fuel, efficiency factor and other parameters that characterize the product);

d) section “Description and justification of selected design” contains:

description and justification of selected design, diagrams, packages (if the package is specified) and other technical solutions;

assessment of ultimate technical solutions for compliance with patent clearance and competitiveness requirements;

information about used inventions (numbers of inventor’s certificates and numbers of applications for invention stating the priority date);

results of models testing (if they were manufactured) and assessment data of models compliance with specified requirements including ergonomics and technical aesthetics requirements;

information about transportation and storage;

information about the product compliance with safety and industrial sanitation requirements;

e) section “Estimations that prove the design serviceability and reliability” contains:

estimations that prove the product serviceability (kinematic, electric and thermal estimations, hydraulic and pneumatic systems estimations etc.);

estimations that prove the product reliability (life, maintainability, preservation capacity estimations and others).

f) section “Description of works arrangement using the product under development” contains the information about works arrangement with the product at operating site including:

description of product specific work methods and procedures in modes and conditions stipulated in the technical specifications;

description of methods and procedures of product transportation, mounting, storage and its startup at operating site;

evaluation of product operating data (interchangeability, serviceability, maintainability, environmental durability and fast troubleshooting);

information about attending personnel qualification and number of personnel;

g) section “Expected technical-and-economic indexes” contains:

economic indexes, required estimations;

rough estimation of the price for pilot and serial product and of the production and operation costs;

h) section “Level of standardization and unification” contains:

information about the standard, unified and adopted assembly units and parts which were used for product development and also standardization and unification parameters of product design.

Annex to explanatory note contains:

  • copy of technical specifications;
  • materials of art and design study that do not belong to design documents;
  • list of works which should be carried out at the stage of working documentation development;
  • list of references etc.;
  • list of documents to be used during technical design development, which the product designer receives from other enterprises and organizations (inventor’s certificates, experts’ report upon patent clearance, consumer’s certificate on required production volume of the products under development etc.).

List of works performed during the development of technical design

The following works are generally carried out during the development of technical design:

а) working out of constructive solutions for the product and its main component parts;

b) performance of required estimations including those that prove technical-and-economic indexes specified in technical specifications;

c) performance of required schematic diagrams, connection diagrams etc.;

d) development and justification of technical solutions providing the reliability indexes specified in technical specifications and preceding stages of designing;

e) development, manufacturing and testing of models;

f) product evaluation regarding its compliance with ergonomics and technical aesthetics requirements;

g) evaluation of product transportation, storage and mounting capabilities at its application site;

h) evaluation of product operating data (interchangeability, serviceability, maintainability, environmental durability, fast troubleshooting, product operation quality control, availability of technical state control equipment and others);

i) final preparation of applications for development and manufacturing of new products (including measurement means) and materials to be applied for the product under development;

j) purchased products range, approval of purchased products application;

k) approval of overall, mounting and connecting dimensions with the customer or the primary consumer;

l) working out of assembly units and parts drawings, if it is necessary for faster issuing of the task for specialized equipment development to manufacture the assembly units and the parts;

m) checking of solutions for compliance with safety and industrial sanitation requirements;

n) listing of works which should be performed at the stage of working documentation development, in addition and (or) for works clarification, which are specified in technical specifications, technical proposal and sketch design.
